This films story has been copied so much by now, that chances are No will probably remember where it all started
Well this is the film. A great Martial arts film with heart,Great photography(the beach scenes are spectacular) lots of humour, good performances and much more. In my opinion,Director John G Avildsen should have won the Director Oscar for this film and not Rocky.
The Storyline. New boy comes to afoul of some high school Bullies. Finds elderly mentor who teaches him the takes on the Baddies in the Karate championship and WINS. been(and still is) copied so often in films warrior 1 and 2,Kickboxer,Sidekicks and many others to no these films copied the karate kid and Failed.
This film Grabs you by the guaranteed to have you practising your Karate shots after seeing the film that it deserves all the Credit it Macchio and pat morita are martin Kove is especially good as the baddie who teaches his own way of karate to all the bullies(which basically is to beat the crap out of them)
The soundtrack is Superb Shots of Macchio Practising his karate against the Sunlit beach will always be biggest regret was how fast this film faded out of peoples pecially when they released Karate kid 2,3 and 4... (Karate kid 3,was an absolute shocker) film will always stand out cause of its it is a Great film

There are plenty of reviews here about the plot and characters, so I won't rehash all that here; suffice it to say everything about this movie is great - the writing, the sensitive directing, the acting, and the story. It has everything from the big moments that make you cheer to the more quiet, personal scenes that are beautifully carried out.
Superbly aiding all of this is Bill Conti's score (which has recently been released in Limited Edition by La La Land Records, good job. My only disappointment with this movie is that Bill Conti wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for this beautiful score. He certainly deserved it. Better score than Rocky IMO.

Playing the fictional character the Joker has been tried for many decades by various actors but the closest one to the original was Heath Ledger who won an oscar for the role. Now, it's Joaquin who has taken the lead. A disenchanted individual who tries to cope with life as it hands out grime and dirt in its most ruthless form, starts to take it's toll on Arthur Fleck (Joaquin) who was adopted by his disillusioned mother who suffered severe psychiatric problems. Stemmed with endless turmoil in Gotham, Arthur begins to realize what life has to offer. Yet none of it gives Arthur a sense of relief except when he kills starting with three thugs on a subway line. From then on, his mind clears away the hazy images that his medications blocked him with, to advance further and further into his own existential madness.
I found this version of the Joker to be very gratifying, especially as Joaquin nailed the comic clown's persona to a perfect 'T. Becoming Gotham's crown prince of crime in upsetting the natural order of things as we see it normally. Such as politics, monetary issues, or just living day to day in a world of chaos brimming with upheaval and despair that surrounds us all. Director, Todd Phillips was brilliant in showing us the gritty, dirty streets laced with crime in all corners. Not just the for the elite, but for all levels of humans who want to escape but can't for reasons of either insanity or just plain nostalgia that all people relate to when they move into a new corner of the world.
It is a clear reminder that for the most part, people from all walks of life can only stand so much criticism when they do their jobs, or need to be recognized for their value or contributions to society. When such acts of decadence leaks inward to affect the common man, then the little things begin to build incrementally until it reaches the point of critical mass.
Todd Phillips captured this brilliantly. The music was an incredible match using the early era of the seventies and eighties as a catalyst to the Joker's rise to fame. It helped his madness, it helped mould his persona into the devious creature that helped purge out the elite to their own wasteland while at the same time, had given birth to the Batman. This was an incredible movie, from start to finish. Lots of emotional turmoil, sadness, mind bending plots as to why Arthur plunged into the abyss of chaos. I recommend this film to all fans of the Joker franchise. It doesn't hold a lot of violence, but when it's needed, Phillips delivered perfectly to balance the story's theme.

I normally would cringe at the thought of giving any film a 10 rating, no movie is perfect and I guess this isn't either, but for me I suppose this gets pushed from a 9 to a 10 just for being the type of film that Hollywood just doesn't make anymore.
This movie takes one of comic's most famous mad clowns and takes you with him on the soul destroying journey of how he became Joker. Don't listen to the online loonies, this movie won't make you attack anyone, it will however make you think about mental illness and the people who suffer in silence. As well as the general, but basic, concept of kindness to others.
On this journey, though you often vehemently disagree with joker's actions, you're nonetheless compelled to understand those choices. Phoenix and Phillips don't just deserve Oscars for this, what they've created essentially amounts to a treatise on the more tragic side of the human condition.
